ARC Review: Fragile Bonds by Sloan Johnson

"Without trust, we have nothing."

These are the words which have haunted Melanie Erickson for six years. When she walked out of the house Xavier Ross bought as their forever home, she thought she was closing that door permanently, but fate had other plans.

Xavier Ross tried to keep everyone at a distance until Melanie came into his life. The more he tried to fight his feelings for her, the more he fell in love. One rash decision fractured the trust that was essential to their relationship.

Six years later, she is the last person he expects to see walk through his front door. Will Xavier and Mel be able to learn to trust one another again so they can fulfill a dying woman’s wish?

Where to start...Fragile Bonds is such an emotional, heartbreaking and beautiful story. It's a story about second chance at love and the why things happen for a reason. Sometimes it wasn't meant the first time around, but given a second chance--it becomes perfect!

Melanie and Xavier were in love six years ago. He was the only man that Melanie ever loved, until an incident/rash decision  broke them apart. Now, six years later, Xavier is married with a child, Jacob, and his wife, Alyssa, is dying and has a short time left. So to care for Alyssa and to make her comfortable, they bring in a nurse who specifically cares for families in these situations. And guess who that nurse is...? Melanie!

Melanie puts her feelings aside and does her job by taking care of Alyssa--and she does it well. But she is conflicted with feelings and the typical "what-ifs" while she is caring for this family. Xavier of course is also feeling conflicted because he loves both women. And knows that Melanie was his great love that he let go years ago.

And let me just say, right off that bat, there is no cheating in this story! I loathe stories with cheating and this is not one of them!

Melanie grows extremely close to Xavier's wife and son. She practically becomes part of their family. But while Alyssa gets sicker, she asks Melanie for a few promises of taking care of her husband and son.

I can't and won't spoil details, but I will say this story is emotional and beautiful. It truly is a great book about second chance love, while discovering it being all new again. I loved Jacob, the four-year old son, he brought so much to the story and helped Melanie and Xavier grow.

By the way, this books talks about Xavier being her "Dom" in the past, so don't get this confused as a book about BDSM--it was just a point  in Melanie and Xavier's lives when they were together the first time around.

I can't wait to read more from this author, Fragile Bonds is well written and you can't help but fall for the characters.
