ARC Review: Sustained (The Legal Briefs #2) by Emma Chase

This book can be read as a standalone.

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

4.5 Stars

Jake Becker gives Drew Evans a run for his money! He's smart, powerful, successful and funny! Again, Ms. Chase truly knows how to write from a male's perspective and that is what I love about her books. Sustained will be added as a re-read for me in the future.

Jack Becker is a defense attorney and will successful get his clients off the hook, no matter what. He'll find that loop hole! He's good at his job and his life is the way he likes it.

But in comes Chelsea McQuid and her broad of nieces and nephews that causes a whirlwind of chaos into Jake's life. Chelsea's life changes in an instant when she's appointed guardian over her nieces and nephews after a tragic accident that took away her brother and sister-in-law. But Chelsea didn't think twice about dropping her life and taking care of them. But losing their parents, each kid has their own way to cope with the loss. This is how Jake gets introduced to the McQuids.

Jake finds himself helping Chelsea and her family in everything. There's a pull about her that he can't seem to stay away or say no. Plus, the kids have taken a liking to the lawyer and vice versa.

I think that Jake and the kids really made this book! Jake had a unique relationship with each child--and it was sweet and funny all at the same time. Plus, the chemistry between Chelsea and Jake is deep. The attraction between them really worked throughout this book. It was a balance for these two and for the kids.

Sustained is a fantastic read that made me laugh. There's a bit of drama and angst, but overall this book is steamy (between Chelsea and Jake!), sweet and full of funny one-liners. As always, I'm looking forward from Ms. Chase and this series!
